THE HOLY SPIRITS VIEW
Tormore has spent most of its history as anonymous blending stock — Chivas Brothers keeping the vast majority for its blends, releasing almost nothing under its own name. This 16 Year Old is part of the distillery's first proper core range, launched only in 2022 under new custodians Elixir Distillers. A genuine chance to taste an under-known Speyside gem finally being allowed to speak for itself.
 
THE DISTILLERY
Tormore was built between 1958 and 1960 on the banks of the River Spey — one of the most architecturally distinctive distilleries in Scotland, designed by Sir Albert Richardson with ornamental gardens and a clock tower that chimes a tune on the hour. Despite the grandeur, its whisky spent decades almost entirely anonymous, swallowed into blends like the old Long John label. That changed in 2022, when Elixir Distillers — the team behind Port Askaig and Elements of Islay — took over as custodians and began building Tormore's first serious single malt range.
 
THE WHISKY: 16 YEAR OLD, SHERRY CASK
Matured in a mix of cream sherry and Oloroso sherry casks, this expression is built to draw out Tormore's naturally fruity, blueberry-jam character while layering in genuine sherry depth — French oak Oloroso butts bringing darker, nuttier spice, American oak cream sherry casks bringing sweetness. It's designed as a full after-dinner dram, with real structure from start to finish.
 
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Christmas cake and soft baking spices, with subtle oak and a hint of citrus underneath.
Palate: Sticky dates, demerara fudge and ripe blueberry, rounded out by vanilla.
Finish: Warm and lingering, spiced fruit and gentle oak closing things out.
Serve: Neat, in a Glencairn glass — this has enough sweetness and spice to work well as a genuine after-dinner pour, alongside dark chocolate or a rich fruit cake.
