Springbank 15yo - Campbeltown Single Malt

THE HOLY SPIRITS VIEW
Springbank is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown, and the only Scottish distillery still doing every stage of production on site — floor malting through to bottling — without exception. The 15 Year Old is a core release, but batch variation here is real and worth chasing: this 2026 outturn is running noticeably richer and deeper than the 2024 batch, closer to sherry-bomb territory while staying balanced. Worth grabbing while this particular batch lasts.
 
THE DISTILLERY
Founded in 1828 and family-owned by J&A Mitchell ever since, Springbank does something almost no other Scottish distillery does anymore: everything, in-house, from floor malting its own barley to bottling the finished spirit. That total control is why Campbeltown, once Scotland's whisky capital and now down to three working distilleries, still produces some of the most distinctive, maritime-inflected malt in the country.
 
THE WHISKY: 15 YEAR OLD, 2026 RELEASE
Matured entirely in Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 46% ABV. This is the June 2026 outturn — and, per recent batch comparisons, a rounder, richer, deeper expression than the 2024 release, leaning further into full sherry character while keeping Springbank's core maritime backbone intact underneath.
 
TASTING NOTES
Demerara sugar straight off, dark chocolate, Christmas cake dense with dried fruit, toasted almonds, toffee, a curl of cured meat and clove pushing through, iodine, tinned prunes — proper Oloroso hallmarks all sitting on top of that unmistakable Springbank salt-and-smoke. Creamy on the palate, raisins, figs, marzipan, Brazil nuts, vanilla, sooty kiln smoke and tobacco lurking underneath, viscous, almost chewy. Aeration brings out more walnut, more cocoa powder, glazed cherry at the edges. Growing and developing, leather and soot easing off slowly. Nearly a sherry bomb, but never loses its footing. Gorgeous.
Serve: Neat, in a Glencairn glass, ideally after dinner or alongside a good cigar — this is built for slow evenings, not quick pours.
