Pouilly-Fuissé, Domaine du Roc des Boutires 2022
LE DOMAINE: ROC DES BOUTIRES
Domaine du Roc des Boutires farms just 4.2 hectares on an east-west facing strip of land at the same latitude as the village of Pouilly, in the Mâconnais — Chardonnay planted mostly in the early 1970s, on Jurassic limestone interlaced with clay and shale. It's the same underlying geology that runs beneath the Premier and Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte d'Or further north, a detail that goes some way to explaining why Pouilly-Fuissé has increasingly been treated as Burgundy's own "fifth village" of serious white wine, rather than a simple Mâconnais afterthought. Every bottle comes exclusively from estate fruit, farmed with a light touch and minimal intervention.
LE VIN: POUILLY-FUISSÉ 2022
This bottling is a blend of Chardonnay drawn from five separate lieux-dits across the village of Pouilly, giving it real breadth and complexity for a village-level wine rather than the narrower focus of the domaine's single-vineyard cuvées, such as their prized En Bertilionne. 2022 was a generous, sun-filled vintage across the Mâconnais, and it shows here in a wine of real richness balanced by genuine precision — the kind of Pouilly-Fuissé built to challenge the assumption that this appellation only makes simple, easy-drinking Chardonnay.
TASTING NOTES
Colour: Pale gold with a faint green tint.
Nose: Creamy and inviting, with white flowers, ripe peach and melon leading, layered with a gentle mineral undertone and a light pastry-and-custard richness.
Palate: Full-bodied and rounded, apple and lemon carrying real vibrancy, with warm baking spice and a soft hazelnut note adding depth. Well-structured acidity keeps it precise rather than heavy, with real volume across the mid-palate.
Finish: Long and fluid, the lemon and spice notes echoing gracefully as it fades.
Serve: Lightly chilled, in a white Burgundy glass with some width to it, to let the aromatics fully open. A natural match for roast chicken, scallops, or a rich, buttery seafood dish.
