Mossburn Vintage Casks No.41 : Royal Brackla 2008 Monbazillac
HOLY SPIRITS VIEW
It is not often that a "sweet wine finish" (Monbazillac, Sauternes, Tokaj) marries well with certain malts, but this particular Royal Brackla (16yo) has spent a healthy 2 years finishing in a Monbazillac cask which gave the whisky more weight, a lovely viscosity and a richness of caramelised fruit that is very hard to put down once you've tried it. Dangerously drinkable!
THE OFFICIAL BLURB
This single malt release from Royal Brackla, distilled in 2008, is part of Mossburn’s Vintage Casks series, showcasing the regal elegance of this Highland distillery. Finished in Monbazillac wine casks, this expression offers a vibrant and indulgent whisky experience.
On the Cowder Estate in the Scottish Highlands lies Royal Brackla Distillery, founded by Captain William Fraser in 1812. A distillery quite literally 'Fit for a King', King William IV granted the "Royal" status to Brackla whisky in 1835, making it the first whisky distillery to receive a Royal Warrant. They have tall stills and they distil very slowly which gives greater reflux (contact with the copper). This makes the a light, delicate and perfumed spirit.
TASTING NOTES
Expect honeyed apricots, floral notes, and a touch of spicy oak on the nose, leading to a rich palate of caramelised fruit and complex sweetness. The finish is long and evolving, with a lingering vinous depth.
