Isle of Raasay The Chinkapin
The Chinkapin joins Isle of Raasay distillery's core range as the third permanent single malt. Bottled at 50.2% ABV, this lightly peated whisky marries peated and unpeated spirit, fully matured in fresh and refill Chinkapin oak casks.
Chinkapin oak is a North American oak species rarely seen in Scotch maturation. Heavily charred with a high toast, these casks dial up barbecue richness, toasted wood, and fragrant spice. Using both fresh and refill casks reins that intensity in just enough, allowing the distillery’s fruit-driven character to shine through the smoke.
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Wood smoke drifts over rich dark fruits, think baked plums and raisin compote, with a lift of citrus oil and a hint of toasted oak.
Palate: Barbecue notes of ribs and smoked ham are followed by honeyed sweetness, bright lime zest, and warming cinnamon spice. The peat stays measured, never overwhelming.
Finish: Sandalwood, gentle char, and lingering fragrant smoke with a touch of drying oak spice.
