Glenfarclas 190th Anniversary limited edition
THE HOLY SPIRITS VIEW
The final chapter in Glenfarclas's Anniversary Trilogy — following 175 in 2011 and 185 in 2021 — and arguably the most ambitious: 78 casks spanning five decades, some dating back to the 1970s, married by a sixth-generation family distillery that's barely changed hands since 1865. Limited to 15,000 bottles worldwide, with the strength itself a quiet nod to history.
THE DISTILLERY
Glenfarclas has been owned by the Grant family since 1865, one of the last great independent Speyside houses still run by the family that founded it. Six generations in, the distillery has built its reputation almost entirely on sherry cask maturation, done with a consistency few others can match.
THE WHISKY: 190TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Distillery Manager Callum Fraser and Managing Director Douglas Belford worked through the warehouses and selected 78 casks spanning five decades — fruitier character from the 1970s, rich sherry depth from the '80s and '90s, deeper toffee and caramel from the 2000s — married into one whisky. Bottled at 51.4% ABV, deliberately referencing the old 90 British Proof measure Glenfarclas used for its first 154 years of production. Non-chill filtered, natural colour, presented in bespoke packaging drawing on label designs from across the decades.
TASTING NOTES
Deep coppery amber, properly old-fashioned in the glass. Rich, sweet, fruity straight off — green apple up front, sherry sweetness rolling in behind, Christmas cake spice building fast. Tobacco leaf, earthy, a pinch of baking spice deepening the longer it sits. Palate decadent, velvety, full-bodied, that '70s fruit threading through '90s sherry richness, caramel and toffee from the younger stock rounding it all out. Dark chocolate creeping in late, fresh tobacco closing it down. Long finish, warming, unhurried. Five decades, one glass — remarkable how coherent it all feels given the span. Proper tribute whisky, not just a trophy bottle.
Serve: Neat, in a Glencairn glass — this has the depth and occasion behind it to be poured slowly, ideally shared with someone who'll appreciate what's actually in it.
