Bodegas del Río — El Cuartito Oloroso Seco

Founded in the 1990s by Don Ángel del Río Álvarez in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Bodegas del Río spent decades as an almacenista — quietly supplying wines in bulk to some of the Marco de Jerez's most respected houses — before bottling under their own name from 2022. The winery is now run by Luis del Río and his brother, the fourth generation of the family, from what is believed to be the closest bodega to the Guadalquivir River in the entire region. That proximity to the Atlantic shapes everything: the coastal humidity, maritime air, and albariza soils of their Pago Miraflores Baja vineyard lend the wines a saline freshness that sets them apart from inland producers.

El Cuartito is the oxidative counterpart to the bodega's celebrated Manzanillas. Hand-harvested Palomino from a blend of old (35-year) and young (6-year) vines undergoes more than 20 years of oxidative ageing in a traditional criaderas y soleras system, split between large 650L chestnut casks and smaller 250L oak barrels.

Deep amber in colour, the nose opens with walnut, toasted almond, fig, warm spice and noble wood, with a subtle saline edge that betrays the wine's coastal roots. The palate is dry and powerful — layers of dried fruit, roasted nuts and savoury complexity — finishing long, elegant and refined. Contemplative Sherry; a wine built for slow drinking and serious food pairing.
