Aberargie Expressions: Golden Promise
THE HOLY SPIRITS VIEW
A young Perthshire distillery doing something quietly radical: a single-variety whisky made entirely from Golden Promise, the heritage barley that built Scotch’s reputation and then lost favour for lower-yielding reasons. Grown on the distillery’s own farm, distilled on site, matured in first-fill casks. It’s an early release from a new distillery, and a clear window into what this one barley variety tastes like.
THE DISTILLERY
Aberargie was founded by the Morrison family in 2017, on a 300-acre working farm in Perthshire where its own barley is grown. The Morrisons have five generations of whisky behind them. They waited years before releasing their first single malt in 2026. Technically a Lowland distillery (it misses the Highland line by a few miles), it doesn’t follow the traditional Lowland style: Golden Promise gives a richer, oilier, more herbaceous spirit than the light Lowland stereotype.
THE WHISKY: GOLDEN PROMISE (ABERARGIE EXPRESSIONS)
Made from 100% Golden Promise barley, distilled in 2017 and matured in first-fill casks only: 68% bourbon barrels and 32% sherry butts. Part of the new Aberargie Expressions series alongside the Laureate edition, which shows how barley variety shapes flavour. Bottled at 48.2% ABV, non-chill filtered, no added colour.
TASTING NOTES
Cooked plums, warm brioche, demerara sugar first, stewed apples, buttery pastry, baked spices behind. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, oily texture, golden syrup sweetness, a herbal, slightly leafy edge keeping the sweetness in check, vanilla and gentle oak from the bourbon casks, a touch of sultana from the sherry. Finish long, sweet and lingering, spice and pastry fading slowly. Rounder and richer than you’d expect from a young Lowlander. Lovely texture.
Serve: Neat, in a Glencairn glass, a good one to share with someone curious about barley varieties.
